Wow, iHikeGPS is really well done. You can download maps for free directly to the app using WiFi or 3G You can choose any location and it will choose the map for you. He has the entire USGS 24K and all the USFS topo maps and they are all free with purchase of the appmakes the iPhone (or iPad) actually useful as a hiking GPS. - Yooper on forum.ih8mud.com

DEVICE REQUIREMENTS

Recommended: the iPhone 4S, 4, & 3GS, and all cellular-capable iPads support all functions in iHikeGPS

The iPhone 3 supports most functions but not background track recording

The iPod Touch and the WiFi-only iPad models require an external GPS receiver to show your location in the wilderness and to record tracks. You can view maps using the iOS device by itself

The original iPhone and 1st generation iPod Touch are not supported

Continued Use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life

The best I've used. (4 stars)
This is by far my favorite GPS app for hiking. It just does more things right than any other GPS app I've used: accurate georeferencing, the ability to add waypoints by lat/long, and the ability to save routes for use on other devices. If it needs one feature to become everything I need from a hiking-oriented GPS app, it would be a graphical compass (beyond just the bearing and heading in degrees).

However, there is one major issue

Great app, maps are old (5 stars)
I love maps, my degree is in Geography, and I worked in land survey when I was first out of college. This app works as described, only drawback for me is the maps of my locale are 30 years old, and a lot can happen in 30 years.
